Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by symmetrical weakness of both lower and upper limbs, impaired deep tendon reflexes, paresthesias, and myopathic changes. Serious cases can affect the respiratory bulbar musculature and lead to death. Despite an increase in Zika virus cases in Colombia, little is known about the disease's presentation or behavior after the epidemic.

METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in three specialized institutions in Medellín to identify the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of GBS patients. Between 2015 and 2020, medical records with the diagnosis code G61.0 were analyzed.

RESULTS: A total of 120 medical records were analyzed. The mean age of the patients was 50.29 +/- 20 years, 57.5% of them being men. The onset of the pathology was preceded by gastrointestinal and respiratory history in 55% of the patients. Among the patients, 45.83% had acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, 21.67% had acute motor sensory axonal neuropathy, 24.17% had acute motor axonal neuropathy, and 7 had Miller Fisher syndrome. During the study time period, five patients died.

CONCLUSIONS: GBS diagnosis presents a decrease in the report after the Zika virus epidemic in Colombia, affects adults and older adults with typical manifestations of the disease.
